Asian Games:- 2018 Complete List of Medals

Asian Games:-
Asian Games, also known as Asiad, is a continental multi-sport event.It will be conducted every four years from all over Asia. The Games were regulated by the Asian Games Federation (AGF) from the 1951 Asian Games, officially known as the First Asian Game in New Delhi, India, until the 1978 Games.
i.The Games are recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and are described as the second largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.
ii.Forty-six nations have participated in the Games, including Israel, which was excluded from the Games after their last participation in 1974.
  • 2022:- 19th Asian Games is scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China.
  • 2014 :-Asian Games has conducted in Incheon,South Korea.
 iii.India ranked 8th in 2014 Asian Games. India bagged 57 medals including 11 Gold, 10 Silver and 36 Bronze in 2014 Asian Games.
 Asian Games 2018:-
18th Asian Games also known as Jakarta-Palembang 2018 held from 18 August to 2 September 2018. Indonesia hosted second time after 1962.The Asian Games are being co-hosted in two cities;
  • the Indonesian capital of Jakarta and Palembang,
  • the capital of the South Sumatra province for the first time.
Cenderawasih, a rare species of a bird in Indonesia had been selected as emblem for the 2018 Asian Games.But later this has been dropped and three new mascots were unveiled.

i. The mascots Bhin Bhin, Atung, and Kaka represent the Eastern, Central, and Western regions of Indonesia and also strategy, speed and strength respectively.
ii. There are 45 nations have participated in 18th Asian Games. There are 465 events in 40 sports. The opening and closing ceremonies of the Games will be held at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta.
iii. Lucia Francisca Susy Susanti is a retired Indonesian badminton player who carried torch light at the 18th Asian Games.
iv.The sport of bridge has been introduced for the first time in the Asian Games 2018.
Kho-Kho gets recognition from Olympic Council of Asia
  •  The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has given recognition to India’s indigenous sport of Kho-Kho, The decision to recognise Kho-Kho was taken in the General Assembly of the OCA held here on August 19 2018.
  • Kho-Kho will now be included as a demonstration sport in the Asian Indoor Games, with the possibility of being included as a discipline in the next Asian Games, official sources told PTI.
Overview of Asian games 2018:-
i.The 2018 Asian Games closing ceremony was held on 2nd Sep.2018 at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta.
ii.China led the medal table for the 10th consecutive time. Chinese multinational holding conglomerate Alibaba founder Jack Ma and gold medal swimmer Sun Yang promoted their birth city Hangzhou, as the city will host the 2022 Asian Games.
iii.North Korea and South Korea march under the Korean Unification Flag at the opening ceremony and, for the first time, compete as a unified team in some events. They won one and first gold medal as a unified team.
iv.Japanese swimmer Rikako Ikee was announced as the most valuable player (MVP) of the 2018 Asian Games.
v.The 6 world, 18 Asian and 86 Asian Games records were broken during the event of 2018 Asian Game.

India at 18th Asian Games 2018
18th Asian Games 2018 - Jakarta PalembangIndia is participating with 572 in 36 sports. It is India’s 18th appearance at the Asian Game. 
  • Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was the flag bearer for India at the opening ceremony of the Games.
  • Indian women’s hockey team captain Rani Rampal was India’s flag-bearer at the closing ceremony.
Highlights:-
i.India finished the 18th Asian Games with 69 medals which became highest number of medals in Asian Games since it participated. They won 15 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze medals.
ii.India beats its previous best medal count of 65 at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.
iii.Govindan Lakshmanan was disqualified after winning bronze in the men’s 10,000m event due to stepped out of the track during one of the laps at the Asian Game.
Wrestling:-
Wrestler Bajrang Punia  won gold medal in the men’s 65 kg freestyle
On August 19 2018,Wrestler Bajrang Puniar from Haryana won India’s first gold medal in the 18th Asian Games after defeating Takatani Daichi of Japan in the men’s 65 kg freestyle. The 24-year-old Indian had won three consecutive gold medals – CWG (Gold Coast), Tbilisi Grand Prix (Georgia) and Yasar Dogu International (Istanbul).He had won silver medal in Asian Games 2014.

Vinesh Phogat  won gold medal in the 50kg women’s wrestling
On August 20 2018, Vinesh Phogat from Haryana defeated Yuki Irie of Japan in the 50kg category at the Asian Games 2018. She became the first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold medal at the Asian Games.She won the gold medal in women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling at 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.She won a bronze medal in the women’s freestyle 48 kg category at Incheon in 2014

India’s 16 year old Saurabh Chaudhary wins 10m air pistol gold

Saurabh Chaudhary from Uttar Pradesh won the Gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games in 10 m air pistol.He had earlier won a gold medal and set a new junior world record in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl ,Germany.
 

Rahi Sarnobat becomes first Indian woman shooter to win Asian Games gold in 25m Pistol
Rahi Sarnobat from Maharashtra became the first Indian woman shooter to win gold at the Asian Games against Naphaswan Yangpaiboon of Thailand in the Women’s 25m Pistol event in Palembang.

Sepak takraw
Indian mens team won first historic bronze in Sepak takraw
Indian won bronze medal in Sepak takraw against Thailand in the semi-finals of the men’s team Regu Event at the ongoing 18th edition of Asian Games.This is India’s first medalin sepak takraw since the debut of the sport in the 1990 Asian Games.

Tejinder Pal Singh wins Gold in Men’s Shot-Put
Tejinder Pal Singh from Punjab won Gold medal in Men’s Shot Put throw with 20.75m in Jakarta, Indonesia.He was breaking the Games record of Saudi Arabia’s Sultan Abdulmajeed (20.57m) set in 2010 break Om Prakash and also Singh’s national mark (20.69m, 2012).

Neeraj Chopra won a gold medal in Javelin-Throw
Neeraj Chopra is a first Indian javelin thrower to win an Asian Games gold medal.He set a national record by 88.06m in Jakarta,Indonesia. India’s only second medal in javelin throw in Asian Games history after Gurtej Singh won a bronze in 1982.
  • Neeraj Chopra is from the Khandra Village, Panipat, Haryana, India
  • He won a gold medal in 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. He also set a world junior record.
  • He also became the second Indian after Milkha Singh to win a Commonwealth and Asian Games gold in atheletics in the same year.
Arpinder Singh won gold in men’s triple jump:
Arpinder Singh from Punjab made a best jump of 16.77m in his third attempt and won gold medal in the men’s triple jump event.This is India’s first men’s triple jump gold medal in 48 years after Mohinder Singh Gill won it in 1970.
Arpinder has a personal best of 17.17 metres at the 2014 National Inter-State Championships in Lucknow. He had finished fifth in the 2014 Asian Games.
Manjit Singh won gold in Men’s 800 Metres:
Manjit Singh from Haryana won gold medal in the men’s 800 metres event by finishing the race in 1:46.15 minutes & Jinson Johnson won silver Medal in same event.
Earlier,Indian Athlete’s Ranjit Singh and Kulwant Singh won Gold and Silver in this Event during 1951 Asiad Games which is known as the  First Asian Game,held in NewDelhi(India)
Swapna Barman Won a Landmark Gold in Women’s Heptathlon:
Swapna Barman of West Bengal won gold medal in the women’s heptathlon event with a score of 6026 points. She has crossed the landmark of 6000 points mark in Heptathlon.
She has won the first gold medal for India in the women’s heptathlon event at the Asian Games.
Jinson Johnson won gold in Men’s 1500 Metres:
Jinson Johnson from Kerala won gold medal in the men’s 1500m event. He finished in 3:44.72 sec. Manjit Singh finished in fourth position with a timing of 3:46.57sec.
Women’s 4x400m Relay Team Wins Gold
India’s 4x400m women’s relay team won its 5th consecutive gold medal in the Asian Games. India has been winning gold medal in this event since 2002 Asian Games.
The team comprised: Hima Das, M R Poovamma, Saritaben Gayakwad and Vismaya Velluva Koroth. They finished the event in 3 minute and 28.72 seconds.
